Why the Oceans Are Blue -Raman Effect

In 1921, Raman, an Indian scientist, was on the trip back home on the vast Mediterranean after he had delivered a lecture about acoustics and optics to the Royal Society. The ocean glittered while the sun shone and the breeze blew. A lot of passengers were taking a walk on the deck. Among those people, a conversation between a mother and her son drew his attention.

“Mum, what’s the name of the sea?” asked the boy.

     “The Mediterranean!”

     “Why is it called so?”

“Because it is situated between Eurasia and Africa.”

“Why is it blue?” Continue reading »

Good or Bad

When Canada was first founded, large stretches of land remained intact. Thousands of Europeans moved there, hoping to build their ideal home.

A man came to a small town in his carriage. He stopped to ask an old man who had been living there for a long time. “Sir! Could you please tell me what kind of people are the residents here? I am looking for a new place to live.”

The old man looked up at this stranger and asked, “Could you please tell me what kind of people are your local residents?”

The man said, “They are so bad-mannered and selfish. I couldn’t bear to see them and I have no joy there. That’s why I left.” Continue reading »

There lived a man named Aidiba in ancient Tibet. Whenever he got mad at of had an argument with someone, he always ran back home and ran around his house and land for three circles, and then sat in his field, gasping.

His house and farmland became larger and larger as he worked very hard, but he would still do the same as usual whenever he had arguments with other people.

Everyone wondered why Aidiba always did so when he was angry. But he never talked about this when he was asked.

Aidiba was very old many years later. His house and land were several times larger than before, but he still walked round his land and house with a stick in his hand whenever he was angry. His grandson begged hi, “Grandpa, you are old now, and Continue reading »

The British Petroleum Company was laying a new natural gas pipeline. When the design was finished, a problem was found: one part of this pipeline needed to go through an old woman’s private estate. Although it was only ten meters under her ground, the old lady refused to make any compromise at all. The company could not enforce the construction, because it was legitimate to protect her private property against violation according to the British laws.

The company had to turn to the press, saying modifying the design would add so much to the budget, and as a state-owned company, every penny they would spend was from the ordinary tax-payer. The company expected the press coverage would exert pressure on the old woman and would persuade her. Continue reading »

About ten years ago, I was receiving some training in a telephone company. The trainer illustrated a message about life with pictures.

He first drew a picture on a blackboard: a person was standing in the middle of a circle. He then added a house, a car and some other people in this circle.

He said, “This is your comfort zone. All the things in this circle—house, family, friends and your job, are important to you. Here you feel comfortable and you are safe from dangers and disputes.”

“Who can tell me what will happen when you get out of it?” asked the supervisor.

There was a sudden silence in the classroom.

Finally an active participant broke the ice, saying, “I will feel frightened.” Continue reading »

An old lady was sitting by the street and looking at a tall wall nearby. She always thought that it would fall apart soon. So she kindly reminded the passers-by, “Look out! That wall will fall apart soon! You’d better stay away from it.” But nobody listened to her, and they walked by without a care. However, nothing happened to the wall!

The old lady was very annoyed, “Why didn’t you listen to me?”

Still some others came past, and she told them the same thing.

Three days passed, the wall still stood there and no one had been in danger.

The old lady was both puzzled and disappointed and walked to the wall, taking a close look at it….

Just at that moment it collapsed and the old lady was buried under the bricks and died.

The small camels asked their mother, “Mom, why are our eyelashes so long?”

The mother said, “They can let us see our directions more clearly in storms.”

“Mom, why are we bow-backed? How ugly it looks!” asked the small camels again.

“They are called humps. Humps can help us store plenty of water and nutrition so that we can do without food and water in the desert for a long time.”

“Why are the soles of our feet so thick?”

“They can support our heavy body so that we can walk a long journey without sinking in the soft sands.”

These little camels were so pleased to hear that, “Aha! How useful we are! But mom, why do we stay in the zoo but not in the desert?”

This story took place about 400 years ago.

In 1608, James I, the King of England, was idling about in his palace when it suddenly occurred to him that he might just as well go to the Royal Court to deal with several cases himself. But quite unexpectedly, Coke, the great judge, refused his request.

“All this country is under the reign of me. Don’t I have the rights to deal with some small cases?” questioned the King angrily.

“You’re Majesty! Please calm down. Although you are head of the country, and both domestic and foreign affairs are subject to you, you shouldn’t deal with the cases!” insisted the Judge.

“That’s ridiculous!” said the King. Continue reading »
